The Department of Watershed Management has completed an important project to improve stormwater management at Crystal Lake—better known to locals as Hamburger Pond. The goal? To capture sediment and pollutants before they flow into the lake and watershed during heavy rain.
A large rain garden at the north end of the lake now helps absorb stormwater through soil and native plants, instead of letting it rush directly into the pond. This process recharges groundwater and keeps harmful runoff out of this vital wildlife habitat. Two additional rain gardens were also installed upstream in the Blue Lots to support this effort.
As a bonus, the new gardens feature native species like Sedges, Virginia Sweetspire, River Oats, and Cardinal Flower—enhancing the ecosystem and supporting local pollinators and other wildlife.
