What We Do
At its core, CPC serves as a catalyst for volunteerism and community activism involving the welfare and sustainability of the park and its resources. We foster collaboration between a diverse group of neighborhood leaders, volunteers, professional consultants and Atlanta city government leaders sharing a common goal: restoring Chastain Park to its world-class heritage.
With one eye on Chastain Park’s glorious past and another on its promising future, the CPC board and membership is focused on four main tasks:
Restore…
- Update and rehabilitate historic structures and legacy amenities to meet the needs of current and future visitors.
Enhance…
- Add new facilities to improve the park and continually make it a better experience.
Maintain…
- Utilize efficient management practices to keep Chastain Park safe, clean and green at every level of operation.
Preserve…
Build a sustainable financial underpinning to ensure that CPC’s long-term goals are adequately funded:
- Public and private partnership
- Private and corporate donations
Master plan in action
A host of capital improvements, incorporated into the approved twenty-year Master Plan, will increase access to the park and expand opportunities for enjoying its natural beauty:
- Reclaiming approximately 12 acres of green space.
- Installing wider sidewalks along the Powers Ferry, W. Wieuca, and Park Road PATH, dramatically improving pedestrian safety with improved separation between pedestrians and street traffic.
- Installing additional infrastructure, including water fountains, bathrooms, benches, signage, and information kiosks, to make the park more user friendly.
- Implementing a comprehensive parking and traffic management plan that includes building a parking structure, improve venue access, and increase
pedestrian safety.
- Establishing distinctive gateways along with consistent site and building design guidelines that honor Chastain Park’s heritage.
- Restoring historic features (including the master grill and picnic areas, witches cave, and Arts Center) and establishing sustainable, environmental policies for the park’s buildings and land.
- Erecting modern tennis and welcome centers (with bathrooms and water
fountains)
- Expanding the recreation center to provide two indoor basketball courts
(one now), with additional space for recreation and community use.
Land Optimization
With the diversity of activities offered by its 18-hole golf course, riding stable, aquatic and tennis centers, youth sports complex and PATH, Chastain Park is the envy of many major U.S. cities. Yet many residents surveyed during the Master Planning process expressed a preference for more green space over creating additional scheduled or programmed activities. To that end, CPC is focused on optimizing non-developed and un-leased park acreage to significantly expand public areas.
