Four years in the making, Chastain Park's new playground will officially open at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19. Consider this your invitation to attend. We'll mark the start of a new era in play. For we have built a 40,000-square-foot playground amid six acres of grassy, tree-lined terrain. Children, from tots to teens, have a place --- their place --- to race down slides, climb into a tree house, sway in giant 'oodle' swings, play an outdoor piano, run or even relax.
Built with the support of private donors and the city of Atlanta, the playground was designed from the imaginations of children. The Chastain Park Conservancy led the endeavor. Play days at the old playground, visits to schools and public meetings told us what children wanted in their playground: A place where they could test themselves, a place they'd want to visit and revisit. Parents said they'd like a safe playground where they could watch their children and visit with each other. And they said they'd like access to restrooms. The new playground has a pavilion that includes bathroom facilities, as well as a space for picnics and birthday parties.
Although the playground has been open for two weeks, March 19 marks the official opening. Chick-fil-A, a donor to the playground, will provide food and drinks. There will be other surprises and a mercifully brief program and ribbon cutting. Play is what the playground is all about, and this is an occasion to have fun.
If you are driving, we urge you to park in the Red Lot on Powers Ferry Rd, near the horse park and the amphitheatre. A shuttle service will be available to take you to the playground if you do not feel like walking. Earlier that day, NYO will hold its annual Opening Day festivities. The park will be a busy place. We hope the baseball and fastpitch softball players who participate in the NYO parade will stick around or return to join us. There is no charge for this event or to use the playground.
The early reviews of the playground have been nothing short of overwhelming. A favorite: 'This is the bestest playground ever.' Come join us from 2-5 p.m. March 19 to decide for yourself. Also, if you'd like to become a permanent part of the playground, please consider the purchase of a specially engraved brick that will become a part of our walkway.
