The 2010 Fall Fundraiser for the Chastain Park Conservancy offers a remarkable charitable opportunity to mingle, and nibble including:

The Hilltop Meadow is located at the far north end of Chastain Park and is most easily accessed by parking along Park Drive. It was formerly the offices and storage area for Theatre of the Stars. The metal building and deteriorating parking area have been removed and are being replaced with two fields and new landscaping. With a bow toward greater sustainability, the new parking area will be revised with a gravel driveway and marked grassy areas for parking places. One field will not be programmed and will be available for use by park patrons at all times. The second field will be partially programmed certain times of the year to support athletics for Galloway and NYO.


The proposed green space will include eighty-six (86) new native trees for Chastain Park. The new trees will create a natural buffer between Galloway and the new fields as well as a buffer between the fields and the surrounding neighborhood. The trees will also enhance the appearance of the park with more color in the fall and more blooms in the spring. In addition, new trail lighting will enhance security and safety in this area of the park.


The Chastain Park Conservancy is delighted to play an instrumental role with this project in pursuit of its mission to make the park cleaner, greener, and safer. Construction is set to be completed by July of this year.




The new Chastain Tennis Center is one of the first of the major capital improvements set forth in the 2008 Master Plan approved by the City Council during the Franklin administration.  The Astra Group will serve as contractor, and construction is projected to be complete in July 2010. The center’s tennis courts will be resurfaced but will remain open during construction and temporary offices will be established on site.

Consistent with the 2008 Master Plan’s emphasis on sustainability, the City has applied for certification of the tennis center as an Earthcraft building meaning it reaches certain criteria as a green, energy efficient building and is similar to a LEED certification.  SouthFace will conduct periodic inspections during construction to be able to grant the Earthcraft certification to the City on completion.  The Conservancy will assist the replanting of new trees to replace those damaged or removed due to construction.

The Chastain Park Conservancy and the PATH foundation will coordinate the slight rerouting of the PATH at the corner of Powers Ferry and Wieuca Road to ensure safety during construction.  If you are coming to Chastain Park to walk or play tennis, the Conservancy would like to encourage you to park in the Red Lot (corner of Powers Ferry and Stella at the amphitheatre) and walk down to the courts to keep as much traffic out of the intersection as possible. Please use caution and look for new signs directing  pedestrians in this area.

The food and fare were excellent, the atmosphere superb. Over 200 attendees had a wonderful time dancing, listening to jazz, and shopping for remarkable items at the silent auction.

Best of all, we raised more money this year than ever before. So good to know that others value Chastain Park as much as we do. We’re now going full speed ahead on the next phase of Master Plan improvements.

Special thanks to Chastain Park Conservancy Board member Mark Root and Advisory Board member Sheri Kimmell for securing the Coca-Cola-sponsored recycling barrels and getting this program off the ground. The recycling program is an important part of the Conservancy’s commitment to sustainability of the park and will hopefully grow over time.
